In Search Of Bonelli's Eagle - Day 1

Day 1, Passerines - 27.1.20

It's a 6.40am flight on my favourite airline "Brynair" for a weeks photography with Turia Hides out in Valencia, I had read a report a little while back on this trip with some great images so I was very keen to experience some of the same action as it's quite close to Murcia an area I know better.

Arriving at Valencia airport around midday I am to be collected by Yanina Maggiotto the local guide for Turia Hides and heading straight to a passerine hide not too far from my Hotel for the week, the Puerta de la Serrania.

With the sun shinning we soon arrive at the hide which is located near a commercial quarry just below the later in the week Bonelli's Hide. Now commercial hides are usually setup on the "standard" distance for full frame cameras and 500mm lens, the 500mm at this distance giving some loverly background bokeh.

The hide setup comprises a raised drinking pool with some rocks as some natural perches and the tamarisks way off in the distance giving a clear uncluttered shot. My first impression was the hide was way to close to the set and the 500mm was in no way going to work so out with the 100-400 not a good start.

All to soon it's late afternoon and time to check in to the hotel, it's not been a very productive session especially with the set being so close never the less it's nice to see some nice Iberian birds up close.

Blue Rock Thrush

Its always nice to see this most unusual coloured thrush that seems to change colour with differing light conditions, in sunlight its the most startling iridescent blue, in cloudy conditional at distance can look almost black.

Black Redstart

In the UK a crowd puller but in winter time one of the most common birds I even get them in the garden!

Sardinian Warbler - female

Dunnock

Crested Lark
